Some Like It Hot and Spicy

This is a website that will singe your eyebrows if you get too close to the monitor. Any real student of Mexico owes it to themselves at some point to go beyond the trivial and the travel, and explore Mexico with an edge to it. Mexico and the Mexican gestalt is about things that can make your eyes tear up and your nose run.

Mexico's a big country, an even bigger culture and the Mexican heart and soul encompasses many things. This particular blog is called The Unapologetic Mexican (although it doesn't have capital letters...) and it lives somewhere out on the periphery of the gestalt. It's written by one who doesn't feel the need to apologize, and who does his unapologetic writing and ranting with a sense of humour. And good graphics.

And the guy is funny and witty. He writes with passion and pathos. His style is intimate and intelligent. Oh, Blogger, I think I'm in love!! OK, it's only a blog. But with insight about the Latina culture... from the best kind of person to teach it: someone who has needed to learn.

Because this Mexican unapologetically grew up with a white mother and didn't get inculcated into his raza until later in life. Don't forget to read the "Mi Familia" section... that's where I found the pathos part. And his bit about some words he coined in "Nezua Brings Palabra". And I'm still in the middle of the story called "The Grand American Dream and el Barco de la Ilusion"....delicious! Root around in the corners of his blog and you'll find many tasty bits... writing about his grandmother, book reviews, comments on the news.

Some of the writing about current events might make this blog feel a bit like biting into a nice crunchy fresh habanero. You know it might hurt a bit... but the rush is SO worth it.

Enjoy!

Having looked at the site, all I can say is that you have very poor taste in men. The guy is a fake and a loser with a chip on his shoulder the size of the Gulf of Mexico. He not only advocates an extreme brand of left-wing politics totally at odds with the good of Mexico or the Mexicans but who has no arguments to back up his beliefs.

I write as a Mexican who has tried to correspond with the man in question - only to be blacklisted by him.

Well, I don't know him at all. But he writes well and his blog is interesting. I like to read lots of different opinions, but frankly I am more interested in his stories and his graphics.

Thanks for commenting! And I hope you keep checking in here for more sights on Mexico.

And please feel free to suggest some that I may not have found yet! By the sound of your "name", I'm thinking you might know of some :-)

It took me a while to find out how to get to the website in question (click on the headline of this post), but I do find the writing compelling.

I don't know about "fake" and "loser." Slinging those words does nothing more than show you disagree with his viewpoint. It does not enlighten us as to why his viewpoint is "wrong."

Frankly, I found a lot of the writing rings true. People are torn emotionally, financially, heartbreakingly by the strange and abusive relationship between the US and Mexico. Much of what is written in this website seems very accurate from my point of view.

Don't bother to also call me a "fake" and a "loser." It will just show a lack of creativity.

Thank you, I really appreciate your writeup, Ellen.

Sorry that someone who clearly has an issue with me ended up on your page. I really have no idea what "mexicano" has a problem with. Nor who they are...I have never corresponded with anyone calling themselves "mexicano," and if I "blacklisted" anyone (not sure what this means, do they mean blocked them from commenting?), it is with good reason. (Such as frustration with persons who cannot communicate their feelings or reality without being hostile or injurious or malicious or plain rude.) I won't waste too many more words on this cat or his implied contradiction of "having [only or just] 'looked at' the site" and "i've corresponded with him." (Is "mexicano" familiar with me? or not?) except to say if you stop back, "mexicano," (tho i doubt it and feel you may have created your blogger ID just to drop derision here, else why only five views of your profile as of today?), please drop by my site and try again to communicate. it sounds as if your feelings were hurt from being "blacklisted," and I'd hate for that to be weighing on you so much that you are embittered, roaming near and far, pissing on other people's appreciation of things that bring them joy or a feeling of solidarity or inspiration.

Ellen, gracias, again. Good "meeting" you. :)
